While biking back from the horse track we bumped into a friend of ours. (Yes, Caen is just that small...) After a few beers at the neighborhood watering hole we finished by checking out some art performances and an expo for "museum night" at a nearby gallery. A great way to finish the day.

What a day....
Friends of ours invited us for lunch at their place. A brand new penthouse apartment with a great view. Right downtown and a block away from the horse track.
So after a scrumptious lunch we walked over to the track.
We bet it all, all 5€ worth.
(In coins... I unloaded a bunch of pennies and 2 cent pieces and wasn't even embarrassed when our friends asked us if we wanted to borrow some money. No thank you, just our 5€ in coins thank you! Which we lost by the way......)
It was packed. Apparently this race was a big to do.
The horses have to trot. If they galop, they are disqualified.
I have no idea what this type of racing (with the jockey behind in the chariot looking thing) is called in English.
I felt just like Charles Bukowski minus the cigarette and drink in my hand.
It was fun to see.
After the first race, we went back to the boxes to get a close up look at the horses. It was my favorite part of the visit:) And I'm not even really a horse person.
(track access)
I knew jockeys were small and thin, but when you see them up close they really do look like a 10 year old. Nothing against 10 year olds.....
I looked it up....... 108 to 118 pounds & average height is 4'10” to 5'6 ″.
In spite of how it may appear, this horse really did seem to be enjoying the hose down after the race. He was opening his mouth, showing his gums to be rinsed and seemed to be loving it.
